My Favorite No-Salt Seasonings

by Jill Harris, LPN, CHC on Aug 13, 2023

Students in my prevention course always want to know…“What no-salt seasonings should I use?”

I have used many over the years and here is my list of favorites.

From Penzey’s NO SALT:

  • Mural of Flavor
  • Sunny Paris
  • Tuscan Sunset
  • Bavarian Seasoning
  • Fox Point
  • Penzey’s Pizza Seasoning*
  • California Seasoned Pepper
  • Italian Herb Mix
  • Herbs De Provence

*For whatever reason, it just says “spices” on the ingredient list, but after digging for what the spices are, this is what Penzey says: Fennel, Basil, Oregano, and Garlic

From Mrs. Dash (NO SALT):

  • Steak Grilling Blend
  • Chicken Grilling Blend
  • Table Blend
  • Fiesta Lime
  • Garlic and Herb
  • Onion and Herb
  • Italian Medley
  • Extra Spicy (2 pack)

Starter Sets (No or Low Salt)

  • Flavor God Chef Spice Set*
  • Flavor God Classic Combo Pack*
  • Flavor God Party Combo Pack*
  • Mrs. Dash Variety Beginner Set
  • Mrs. Dash Extra Spicy Set
  • No Salt For You! Savory Grill Spice Set

Jill’s Personal Taco Seasoning Recipe (No Salt)

  • 1 Tbsp. chili powder (no salt)
  • 2 tsp. onion powder
  • 1 tsp. cumin
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tsp. paprika (smoked or plain)
  • 1/2 tsp. freshly ground pepper

Store leftovers with your other spices!

You will note that the first three seasonings in the starter set list will have a bit of salt (I have them asterisked). Please pay attention to the portion size because it will add up.

You might ask, “Well, why the heck are you including them, Jill?” Glad you asked. I include them for newbies who may need to slow their roll on salt reduction. Going from high sodium to NO salt seasoning might dishearten some. It takes time for your taste buds to get used to a very low-salt diet. My objective is to have you go slow. If you hate what you are eating, you will give up. I hope that makes sense.

You will also note that some of the ingredients of the seasonings will have a lemon or orange peel, and one of the seasonings has turmeric. Remember folks. Oxalate always comes down to quantity. Portion NOT Perfection. These items have very little turmeric or lemon/orange peel, not enough to cause a stone. Promise.

Let me know some of your favs! I can add them to the list!

Happy Mother’s Day to those with kids and/or fur babies!

Your friend and advocate,
Jill
