Do I Have to Give Up My Favorite Foods?

I have been helping patients understand how to prevent kidney stones for a long time. It never gets boring because each person comes with their own set of unique lifestyle challenges and changing habits is rarely easy.

A concern I often address (several times a day) is the need to give up those favorite foods. If you watch our YouTube show, you know I take a no-nonsense approach to diet and lifestyle. But does that mean giving up all your yummy delights?!

NO!

I assure you, you can still have your favorite foods. Life is long, and we must eat cake and takeout pizzas. Are we really only going to eat cauliflower crust for the rest of our lives? I think not!

The only two items I ask you to refrain from are spinach and almond products. Why not almonds, you ask? Because, in my experience, it’s hard to open a bag of almonds and only eat a few. Almonds are extremely easy to overeat—almond snacks, almond milk, almond flour, almond, almond, almond!

Lower oxalate comes down to portion, so if you want two almonds, go for it. I think it’s easier to take them away.

As I always say—Portion Not Perfection.

Nobody makes a stone by eating one spinach salad or a few almonds a day. It’s what we eat over time and in what quantities we eat it that matters.

The other big contributing factor to high oxalate levels is calcium. Make sure you are getting your calcium goals covered each day. It’s essential.

As for sugar and sodium—you have those cookies, but only have a couple and not a whole row.

It’s as simple and as challenging as that.

Life is full of treats. Enjoy them.

The only thing you need to do after enjoying your favorite snack or out-to-eat meal is get right back to work. Don’t get angry or frustrated with “falling off the wagon”. Don’t give up. Simply return to your regularly scheduled program of healthy eating with your next meal choice. Easy.

Diet culture has demonized hot dogs and crinkle fries (I know!). I love hot dogs and crinkle fries and will have them if I want them. Enjoy your food. Move on. That’s it.

Be flexible with your lifestyle, and it will be easier to maintain. Eating perfectly every day is boring. Untrain your mind and stop feeling guilt and shame over a treat. Just get back to work with your next meal.

You got this!

Your friend and advocate,
Jill

Do I need to follow the low oxalate if my kidney stones were cause by 30 years of a misdiagnosed parathyroid tumor? After researching I found a surgeon in Tampa who specializes in this disease! He was able to remove the tumor and test the remaining ones to make sure they were normal! Since then, I have had no kidney stones and my blood calcium is normal at 9.2 instead of 11. Just wondering what your thoughts are about my diet! Do I need to continue a low oxalate diet? I am 5’3” tall and weigh 108 lbs! Thank you for all you do to help us!

      Hi Nancy,
You will not have to worry about ox as much but the rest of the KSD is simply healthy adn what everyone should be paying attention to. Glad you got the PTH stuff fixed. Did you go to the Norman institute. Supposed to be the best!

“The Kidney Stone Diet is far more than just a diet; this plan is life-altering!”

“The group calls will transform you physically and emotionally. Once you start this journey, your health naturally improves. I have lost a total of 40 pounds and have consistently kept it off. The group calls are such support; this is more like family than a zoom meeting to stay accountable. Jill is far more than a nurse; she is a life coach. Her platform is invaluable.”

Kim J. | Kidney Stone Prevention Course

“I have been following the Meal Plan for about 6 weeks and I feel amazing.”

“Eating healthy has also encouraged me to go to bed earlier, so I am also getting more sleep. Because of that, I have been able to get up before work and exercise! So yes, the positive effects are spilling over into all areas of a healthy lifestyle.”

Jerry T. | Meal Plan Subscriber

“I have been a part of the group calls with Jill for the last 14 months, and they are essential to being so successful with the Kidney Stone Diet Prevention Plan.”

Sarah B. | Group Calls with Jill

“These calls are the gold of this program!!”

“I can’t say enough about how Jill knows just the right questions to ask us or how she prods us to think about what is going on in our lives.”

Monica K. | Group Calls with Jill

“I took the course with Jill, and my second 24 hour urine was MUCH better than the first.”

“She gives very practical information, and it WORKS. I was totally overwhelmed at first. I got very poor diet information from my doctors. Jill made it easy for me to understand, and I took it one day at a time. I still watch her videos when I need a tune-up. Jill is the best, and she really cares about all of us. Take the course—it will help you!!!”
