Walk into any pharmacy, and you will see shelves full of “immune support” supplements—vitamin C, zinc, vitamin D, elderberry, antioxidant blends, and powders that promise to strengthen your immune system. It can make immunity seem complicated.
In reality, the immune system does not run on one miracle nutrient. It works best when the body receives a steady supply of vitamins and minerals from real food.
The Truth About Supplements
What many people don’t realize is how much marketing is behind the supplement industry. The global supplement market is worth close to 200 billion dollars a year, and a huge amount of advertising goes into convincing people that they need special pills, powders, and “immune blends” to stay healthy. Many of these products are sold with vague promises like “supports immunity” or “boosts defenses,” which sound impressive but often lack strong evidence.
Another important issue is quality control. Unlike prescription medications, many supplements are not required to undergo rigorous third-party testing before going on sale. That means the amount listed on the label may not always match what is actually in the bottle. Some products contain more than the label claims, some contain less, and some contain ingredients that are not listed at all.
“Proprietary blends” can make this even more confusing. Companies often market these blends as something special or unique, which can make consumers think they are getting a secret or highly advanced formula. In reality, a proprietary blend simply means the company does not have to tell you how much of each ingredient is in the product.
You might see a long list of herbs, vitamins, or botanicals on the label, but the actual amounts are hidden. One ingredient could make up most of the blend, while the others are present in very small amounts. Consumers often end up paying a premium price for a formula that sounds impressive but may contain very little of what they believe they are buying.
A Special Note for Kidney Stone Formers
For kidney stone formers, there is another important issue to consider. Many supplements contain a long list of herbs and plant ingredients that most people have never heard of—and the oxalate content of many of these ingredients has never been studied.
That means you may be unknowingly consuming ingredients that could contribute to oxalate buildup. When the goal is to manage urine chemistry and reduce stone risk, taking pills filled with unknown plant ingredients adds an unnecessary layer of uncertainty.
When I take a supplement history from my patients, the list is often surprisingly long. It is not unusual for someone to be taking five, ten, or even more different supplements each day. Sometimes when I ask why they are taking a certain one, they aren’t even sure. They may say something like, “My functional medicine doctor told me to take it,” or “I read online that it helps with immunity.”
Many people end up on a growing list of supplements without really knowing what each one is doing or whether they actually need it. Over the years, I have also seen plenty of kidney stones that were likely influenced by heavy supplement use. Large doses of certain vitamins and minerals can alter urine chemistry, increasing the risk of stones. More is not always better—especially when it comes to supplements.
Nature packaged your vitamins in food long before factories put them in bottles.
When you eat your vitamins instead of swallowing them, your body gets far more than just a nutrient number on a label. Whole foods provide fiber, water, plant compounds, and hundreds of micronutrients that work together to support your health.
Fiber, Gut Health, and Kidney Stone Prevention
Fiber plays an especially important role in gut health. Your gut bacteria feed on certain types of fiber and resistant starch, and when they break these down, they produce compounds called short-chain fatty acids. These compounds support the immune system, reduce inflammation, and maintain gut lining health. In other words, your immune system and your gut are deeply connected.
A healthy gut microbiome may also help prevent kidney stones (the science is still developing). Some gut bacteria help break down oxalate before it is absorbed into the bloodstream. When people eat a variety of fiber-rich foods, they support the growth of beneficial bacteria that keep the digestive system balanced.
Fiber also helps keep digestion moving, supports regular bowel movements, and helps you feel fuller after meals. That fullness can make it easier to maintain a healthy weight. Fruits and vegetables also help slow digestion and stabilize blood sugar levels, which can reduce energy crashes and cravings later in the day.
Whole foods support heart, digestive, and metabolic health in ways that isolated nutrients simply cannot replicate. Eating fruits and vegetables regularly is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, better blood pressure control, improved cholesterol levels, and a healthier body weight.
Are You Getting Enough?
Health organizations generally recommend at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Many experts suggest that seven to nine servings is even better for long-term health. When I talk with my patients, most admit they are not reaching even the minimum. Many people are getting only one or two servings per day, making it much harder to meet their vitamin and mineral needs from food.
There really is no shortcut when it comes to supporting your health. Taking a pill may feel like the easy solution, but our bodies were never designed to run on capsules and powders. Keeping your body healthy is good old-fashioned daily work. And honestly, it should be.
Your body is an incredibly complex and sophisticated machine. It deserves real nourishment, movement, sleep, and care. There simply isn’t a pill that can replace the benefits of a plate full of real food.
For kidney stone formers, this matters even more. Fruits and vegetables provide potassium, fluids, and natural alkali that help support healthier urine chemistry—delivering nutrients in balanced amounts that the body is designed to handle, while also supporting hydration and overall health.
Gut-Friendly Foods That Also Support Kidney Stone Prevention
Many foods that support a healthy gut are also excellent choices for preventing kidney stones. These foods provide fiber, fluid, potassium, and nutrients while keeping oxalate levels reasonable.

Many of the vitamins people buy in supplement form are already sitting in everyday foods. Below are some common nutrients people reach for in pill bottles, along with simple foods that naturally provide them.
When these nutrients come from food, they arrive with fiber, water, and other helpful compounds that support your body in ways isolated supplements cannot.
The serving sizes listed below are standard reference portions used to show how much of each nutrient a typical serving can provide. You don’t need to eat that exact amount to benefit—even smaller portions contribute helpful vitamins and minerals. The goal is simply to include these foods regularly so your body can steadily receive the nutrients it needs.
If a food listed below is higher in oxalate, I’ll note it with “in moderation.”
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is the most popular supplement people reach for when they think about immunity. But many vegetables and fruits easily provide more than the daily requirement.
Getting vitamin C from food also avoids the potential increase in urine oxalate that can occur with large vitamin C supplements. Food provides vitamin C along with fiber, water, and other beneficial plant compounds.

Wrap Up
Before reaching for another bottle labeled “immune support,” take a look at your plate. If your meals regularly include colorful vegetables, fruits, protein, healthy fats, and whole foods, you are already giving your immune system the support it needs.
Real food delivers nutrients the way your body was designed to use them—along with fiber, fluids, and hundreds of helpful compounds that a pill simply cannot provide.
