ASMR and TikTok Content Trends
Welcome back to the Kidney Stone Diet Podcast, the show about reducing your kidney stone risk and living your best life. I'm your host and fellow student, Jeff Sarris.
And I'm Jill Harris, your kidney stone prevention nurse.
We're going to do an ASMR episode.
Yeah. Like, what are these people doing? I like it, too.
It gives me chills.
No, no, no, I just meant I like what you're doing.
No, but, and then they'll– there'll be women with all these nails and they're going like this. And people either love it or hate it, but there's TikTok, and I know I'm 60 and I shouldn't be talking about TikTok, or almost 60. But, there's ASMR things, and it's very interesting.
Yeah, it's wild. Also, that we sort of discovered this, that it is something that people like. It's, yeah.
Look it up, people. It's very interesting. It'll give you chills, or you'll be very annoyed by it.
And most people are like very annoyed at first, and then they're like, " no, I'm feeling something from it." So, yeah, it's interesting.
Yeah, and that is the beauty of TikTok. You said you shouldn't be on there or whatever, but there is so much. It's just anything you might be interested in, some wild and crazy things, but also some very grounded things as well.
It's just– it's just another platform.
I'm sorry, I love it. And I love everything from, you know, whether it's cooking or health, or funny people falling, I kind of like that. I– I– I'm sorry.
Why do we like that so much? Just as humans, like, we all do.
I don't know. My sister and I are always sending each other, and– and we're both like, "Well, we're going to hell, you know that, right?" And she's like, "Yeah, I know."
But yeah, it's just– it's– it's just built into us. I don't know what it is, but yeah.
Fun stuff, but anyway, shall we dive into this week's question?
Let's dive in, baby. Let's go.
Soybean Oil in Commercial Breads
Hey, this is Glenn from Louisiana. Yeah, I had a calcium oxalate stone. I did my 24-hour urine test a while back.
I noticed a lot of the commercial breads have soybean oil in them, and also I noticed that Ezekiel has soybeans in their product. So, I just want to know what traces of amount of soybean oil are in these breads and is it safe to eat? I used to eat the Nature's Own whole grains breads, and that has soybean oil in it.
So, that was my question. I enjoy your program. I've got your Harvard list, and that's it.
Giddy up from Louisiana.
Oxalate Content in Soy Products
Giddy up, Glenn from Louisiana! Right on! I love it.
Okay, so he has the Harvard list, and so Glenn's a really smart man. He's looking at the list and he's like, "Well, I know that soybeans have 96 or 90-something milligrams of oxalate per cup." So he's like, " should I be having some bread that has soybean oil or soybean whatever product?" And so it's a great question because Glenn knows he doesn't want to go through another kidney stone again.
So, great question. Here's the answer. Can you have bread that has any kind of soybean product in it?
As long as it's not soybean flour, Glenn, the whole thing's made out of, absolutely, you can have a sandwich. It's not going to bother your oxalate level. Will there be some oxalate in that piece of bread?
Yeah, could be. Enough to make a kidney stone? No.
So I'm not worried about it. I don't want you eating– So when I say things like, "I'm not worried about it," I always know to say this after. But, Glenn, that don't mean I want you having a whole loaf of bread every day, because when people will say, "Well, Jill, you said it was no big deal, so I had like six times the amount that I told you I originally did." Well, that I don't want you to do.
So I know Glenn is on his stuff, 'cause he has the Harvard list, which you can find at kidneystonediet.com, and he's asking a really great question: "I see this in the ingredient list. Is that going to cause a kidney stone?" When we're looking at ingredient lists, the farther down the ingredient list that food appears, or that ingredient, then you know there's less of it, right?
So we know that bread isn't made with soybean flour, it's soybean oil or soybean byproduct, and there's not going to be a lot of oxalate in one slice of bread. So you can absolutely have a sandwich from Ezekiel or whatever bread you're using. Also, when I say something like, "you know, don't worry about it," people will say, "She's really glib.
She didn't have no kidney stone come out of her. I'm worried about it." Have that food when you're doing your next urine collection. Make sure you get your calcium needs met every day, and you'll see the oxalate will not be over 30, which, by the way, is where– we want oxalate levels in your urine to be under 30 on your 24-hour urine collections.
You will see many different ranges on 24-hour urine collections. Labs will report all different kinds of ranges. Ideally, all research shows we want your oxalate level under 30.
And if you get your calcium needs met and you have normal slices of bread during the day, Glenn, do that during your urine collection so you can be rest assured your oxalate's not any higher.
Yeah, it's so valuable. So valuable to test. But the whole Turn It Around Busted Brown, he's doing that, which is great.
Like, that's sort of one of the– one of the other first steps to know what we're actually consuming.
Reading Food Labels for Kidney Stone Prevention
That's so important, and I love to hear that Glenn is doing that. And, and yes, Turn It Around Busted Brown, people will send me, "Jill, this vitamin," or, "Jill, this package." I don't know, turn it around, Busted Brown! Look at the ingredient list!
I don't know by that the front of the package. You always have to turn your food products around and look at the ingredient list and see what's in there. Like I said, it will have all these things, and the list will go down, down, down.
And if you're asking about something that's at the very bottom of the list, there ain't much in it, okay? So, yeah. I'm I'm thrilled that he's looking at his ingredient list.
A plus for you, Glenn.
Yeah, giddy up! I love that– I love the end– the end to that, voicemail. But, yeah, thank you so much for that call.
That was a perfect one. And, somehow, we haven't touched on soybeans, it seems like, until now, which 140-something episodes in. But that's why we want you guys to call.
If you have a question, the number is 773-789-8763, and there is a good chance that you will spark something, just like Glenn did, that we haven't touched yet, but we need to, because we need to help as many people as we can. That's the whole point of doing the show.
Yes, and as Glenn said, people, giddy up and press that red subscribe button, please.
Definitely. And you can find all the resources, anything you need at kidneystonediet.com. And wherever you're listening or watching, like, we really, genuinely appreciate you.
Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube. But if you– if you have a comment, if you want to leave a comment, head over to YouTube, because that's where the conversation is for every episode. So, it's just the best place to, put in your, your feedback, your, contribution to the conversation.
But anyway, with that, I think we will wrap for this week. Thanks so much for watching, and we'll see you next time.
Thanks, Glenn. Have a great day. Glenn's my kind of guy.
Giddy up, indeed.
