Welcome back to the Kidney Stone Diet podcast, the show about reducing your kidney stone risk and living your best life. I'm your host and fellow student, Jeff Sarris.

00:00:21 Jill Harris

And I'm Jill Harris, your kidney stone prevention nurse. Hello, Jeff!

00:00:25 Jeff Sarris

Hey, so how you doing?

00:00:26 Jill Harris

How's everything going today?

Feeling very pumpkin-y. I'm feeling very pumpkin-y.

00:00:31 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, it's what, the second day of summer, but we're both sort of dressed for fall. I'm wearing a little hoodie. It's not that perfect out today.

00:00:40 Jill Harris

No, it's not. And so, I want to tell you this. Not that anyone wants to hear it, nor do you, but I'm going to say it anyway.

You all know it doesn't stop me.

So the other day, one of my friends was like, "Oh, I want to hear your podcast." I'm like, "All right, go put on your earphones and listen to it." And she's like, "Well, the earphones are way upstairs. I'm going to just listen to it." I said, "All right, I don't want to hear myself. I don't listen to myself, I don't."

So she put it on and, here's what and people who watch the show or listen to the show, comment on this, why not, in the comments section. Here's what my take is. Jeff sounds like a beautiful

Caucasian Barry White, soothing, wonderful. And I sound like a turkey screaming on the Thanksgiving Eve, okay? So yes, I do.

I do. And so a lot of people are like, "Well you guys are the perfect pair." Okay, but he's just a sexy, mellow kind of, I mean you want to go to bed to him and I'll wake your ass up better than two cups of coffee any old day. So, I was just it's just we're just so different, so it's hilarious.

But really, I was a little anxious that day when she was listening to it and I listened to your voice and I was like, "Oh my god, this needs to be on an app.

Just needs to be on an app." But then when I started settling down, I piped in and that was all over.

00:02:00 Jeff Sarris

Oh no, you're just you're too kind. No, because we need the energy, you know? Like I'm I'm just here to guide things along and do the do the tech stuff.

It's all it's all your knowledge and your education here. That's that's why we're here.

00:02:13 Jill Harris

Yeah, you're too kind. Anyway, what are we doing today?

Tracking Macros for Kidney Stone Prevention

00:02:17 Jeff Sarris

So, yeah, we'll go back for another listener question. We have a whole a whole backlog. We actually missed the episode this week.

We didn't have a chance to connect and record these. So, we're first week we've missed out of we're 30 something.

00:02:30 Jill Harris

I know, I'm sad about that, but it is what it is.

00:02:33 Jeff Sarris

Oh yeah, it just happens. But yeah, so we have a backlog of calls, so we will start with this one here.

00:02:40 Jill Harris

Hi, this is Francesca from Lake Arrowhead, California, and I would like to know,

Since we are all diet-conscious, we want to cut our calories, can we cut everything else out on that magic macro list that is provided there at the Kidney Stone Diet? Just wanted to know. Thank you so much.

Okay, what is she asking, Jeff?

00:03:04 Jeff Sarris

So, she's asking about macros and can we essentially just focus on the ones that matter and ignore the rest?

00:03:14 Jill Harris

Well, this is a weird question. Nothing against you, love. It's not about It's not about the caller.

I'm just I want to understand it better. So, she's asking So, obviously she's tracking macros.

00:03:28 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, and I think she's asking probably mostly about because there's protein numbers and things on the website. So, I think she's thinking about sort of those broad strokes of macros like protein and whatnot. And can she just ignore the rest?

00:03:45 Jill Harris

Well,

Macros being carbs and protein and fat. I get all that, but and listeners would be like, "Boy, you think they'd prep a little." We're not prepping, that bores me, people! It bores me, so we're all going to work on this together,

Okay? I've had a long day. Okay.

So,

Personally, and I'll get hate in the comments, like I don't like I care about that, whatever. I'm I'm not a believer in the counting macros. I think that's going to be a fad soon enough, okay?

People are doing it, I get it. They want to count all their macros. But why do people have to make this so complicated?

So,

If you follow and you may say, "Well, all right, now you're telling me to count salt and sugar and everything else." I well, you know, listen, you want to get a fair amount of protein depending on what your needs are. You want to pay attention to how much salt and added sugar you're eating.

And as far as the macros go, do what's right for you. Look, if you like counting macros, that's wonderful. I think people need to do what works for them, whether it's keto, paleo, macro counting, whatever it is.

But you need to fit those into our goals if you have kidney stones. And quite frankly, if you have any kind of anything, right? So, often I'll work with people that have kidney stones, hypertension, diabetes.

So, I've got to put all that together and figure out the best way to solve each of their issues. Well, it's not going to be as complicated as people think.

Flaws of Generic Fad Diets

00:05:21 Jill Harris

It's talking to people, getting common sense knowledge down to very bite-sized pieces so they can understand it for them. Listen, people, you got to listen to me with this. Again, I'll get haters, like I care, I'm too old to care about stuff like that.

The reason diets don't work is because you're doing this generic diet

Not based upon what you got going, as far as medical conditions, allergies, sensitivities, what you like to eat,

And what will fuel your body best. So, stop buying books that say do this and do that and do that. How in God's name are we thinking that one plan is going to work for millions of people?

And why I get so hot under the collar about this, and I say this in my Kidney Stone Prevention Course and to my private patients all the time, here's why I get passionate about it. Because people try the celery juice diet, the cabbage diet from 1972, whatever.

They can't do it because nobody can. It's not sustainable. And then they feel like this, "Jill, I've tried every diet in the world.

I can't do Diets don't work for me. I can't do them. I just can't stick to it." Because nobody can stick to those stupid diets.

Why? Because they're stupid. Stupid.

So, this is why, and again, they're like, "Oh, lots of science backed up there."

00:06:50 Jeff Sarris

The title of this should be Stupid Diets.

00:06:54 Jill Harris

Look, who can not eat a piece of bread for the rest of their life? Why would you want to keep on breathing? That's the dumbest thing.

So, you've got to get a wide variety of foods.

You've got to eat it within portion size. Again, the diet industry doesn't want to tell you that because most people don't want to buy that plan. Most people want to eat as much as they want.

They give up one thing, which is a carb. That is a big macro, people.

They're taking away that whole macro. And then they can eat as much other macros, like protein and fat. How does this make sense?

How could that possibly be good for your body? And if you are somebody who says, "I eat as much protein and fat as I want and I'm good to go," then God bless you. I want you to do that, as long as it fits in if you're a stone former, as long as you're not eating as much salt as you want, as much Obviously, if you're doing something like keto, you're not adding a lot of sugar to your diet.

But if it works for you,

Fine. But if it worked for you, I don't think you'd be listening to me right now. So, there's that.

Yes, I know I'm annoying. No one cares.

So, to answer her question, which I'm still a little fuzzy about, if she wants to count macros,

Jeff, are you like, "Girl, it's really easy. You don't understand?"

00:08:18 Jeff Sarris

No, it No, it is a little Yeah, it was a little confusing, but I think the whole premise is sort of for the Kidney Stone Diet, we talk about protein, but we don't really talk about carbs and fat in terms of a number, like a steadfast like, "Okay, don't surpass this."

00:08:32 Jill Harris

Because we don't. And let me tell you. So, if that's what she wants to know, and what's her name again?

00:08:37 Jeff Sarris

Her name is Francesca.

00:08:39 Jill Harris

Oh, Francesca, I love that name! Okay, Francesca. So,

Carbohydrate and Fat Guidelines for Kidney Stones

00:08:43 Jill Harris

We talk about protein because the things that we talk about on the Kidney Stone Diet are particular, specific things for stone makers,

Okay? So,

Again,

Remember, we're not telling you, you know, we're giving you the goals to meet. How you meet them is up to you. As far as carbs and fats,

You got to do what works for you. You got to stay in your caloric needs, right? So, whatever works for you, we're not going to tell you how many carbs to do, that really has nothing to do with anything.

But you're going to naturally have to limit some of the things you're eating because a lot of carbs have sugar and salt. A lot of carbs have oxalate, so it just winds up self-limiting itself anyway. But again, you know, I think there's so many ways that people can do macro work as well.

So, some people like more protein and a little less carbs, some people really like endurance athletes, they want to do heavier carbs and less protein,

Less fat. So, again, I will never give generic I got to talk to people, and then you got to figure that out. But I am not a macro person, like giving a You'll never see an infographic as how many macros people should have.

It's absolutely fine if people want to track that for the things they're doing. But again, they should pretty much they will change depending on people. Diabetics are definitely going to have less carbs, right?

And more protein, right? So, balancing this all out, whether you're paying attention to macros or whatever you're doing, that's where people get so overwhelmed, and that's where my heart always gets so sad, because I get what it's like to feel overwhelmed. I was just talking to Jeff right now, I'm freaking out over finding an apartment.

So, look, we all have our things. I got diet and exercise, doesn't freak me out. So, that's why I can be there for everybody who's listening with that stuff.

But don't be coming to me asking, "Jill, I got to look for an apartment." I'm going to say, "You got to find somebody else, sister. That's not my podcast, cuz I'm freaking out!" Anyway, what else, Jeff?

00:10:45 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, I mean, but I think that's a great point, because we all have our stressors in our lives. Like, there's always something going on and people turn to you because you know this space, you know this inside and out. You can help them reduce their kidney stone risk and not run into this just horrific trouble again.

But this is your lane, this is the lane you're in, you don't everything else isn't necessarily just peachy keen and perfect all the time.

00:11:13 Jill Harris

No, I mean, I would I'd even go in as far as to say, this is my these are my only lanes, so. I mean, you know, I have these are my only lanes. Everything else, that's why always when people do come to me and they're overwhelmed, like I said, my heart gets so sad, because I'm overwhelmed with other things in my life.

So, I totally understand that. And when somebody has the has some good advice around diet and nutrition and exercise, all of it,

Behavioral Habits and Mindset Around Nutrition

00:11:39 Jill Harris

Changing lifestyle habits, because that's what really this is about. That's what's so hard about this. It ain't knowing, again, what's what's healthy and what's not.

We all know that. We know we shouldn't be eating a chocolate malt. Look at me from 1952, like I'm on Happy Days at the diner.

You know what I mean. We all know that a shake or whatever the heck it is, you know, it's not the healthiest, right? And we know that vegetables are healthier for us, but it's it's the why we're choosing what we do.

Many times it's used as a coping skill, many times it's you know, used as a drug, like anything else in the world. Food is available, we have to eat, it's not something we can go without, and we have a whole bunch of habits around these kinds of things. So, that's where I really like trying to help people, is understanding that kind of stuff.

Sorry, I'm shutting off my phone again, not prepared, people.

00:12:31 Jeff Sarris

No, it's all good. But yeah, I think that was good, sorry Francesca, that we didn't it took a minute to figure out the question. But, yeah, we do.

We

00:12:38 Jill Harris

Jeff, Francesca's like, "I'm never I'm never calling again. That was really easy, Jill, and you biffed it."

00:12:46 Jeff Sarris

No, I hope, yeah, I hope that didn't turn anyone off from calling in, obviously, because, yeah, this is this is all just real. We're going through the voicemails, we're answering, because this is this is what you do. Like, you Actually, let's talk about the Kidney Stone Diet course real quick, because you have the group calls where you do this kind of thing with people, where you can better tailor answers to people.

Kidney Stone Diet Course Group Support

00:13:10 Jill Harris

I'll say this a million times, those group calls, and I was talking about this in the course this week, so those group calls are office hours. Those are there for people. Many people buy the course and they never they don't go to the group calls.

They just want all the videos and they feel like they got the their money's worth with just that. But the office hours is where you come in and out, Monday through Friday, there's four calls a week, and you just come and you ask some questions, but most people stay there because I'm ranting all the time and know we have a good time.

But that's where somebody can say, especially people who are trying to lose weight, also, "Look, Jill, I gained three pounds this week. Let's talk about it." And we break it down in those calls. It is my passion working with the group, cause we all feed off each other, it's a lot of fun, it's it's motivating, it's it's everything.

I mean, I don't know, I love it. And so people can come and they can say, "This is what's going on with me." Why I particularly love the group calls is because then they can see, "Hey, Sandy's listening, and Tom's listening," and they're like, "Yeah, same here, same." I mean, so people can see they're not alone with this, and so I love bringing people together,

And we can all support each other. So, it's kind of like a support group. It's a friend group.

It's a love fest. We laugh, I swear. There's lots of things going on in that group, but we have a really good time.

We really do, and we wind up falling in love with each other. So, what I love about that group is, it's long-term support, motivation, guidance. You can't and it's, you know, it's ridiculously cheap, as you know.

00:14:46 Jeff Sarris

Oh, yeah.

00:14:48 Jill Harris

We're always in trouble,

00:14:49 Jeff Sarris

Yeah, so for anyone who isn't isn't already hasn't already purchased the course, isn't a part of the accountability group, you can go to kidneystonediet.com and yeah, right now the price is I think $189 is the normal price, and then it's $19 a month to continue in the membership. And, yeah, you get direct access, sort of behind-the-scenes access to Jill.

You can always call in, leave your voicemail here, we love all of our callers, but this is a more immediate approach where you're able to help people directly and rapidly.

00:15:19 Jill Harris

Yeah, when you see people in the Facebook group that said, "I just We got like three or four people this week, "Just went to the doctor, I'm all clear. Haven't made a new stone in three and a half years." People, it's possible. And again, I don't have a magic wand.

I have information, I know how to give it to you so you understand it and can utilize it, and then you got to get to work. But my patients that are successful, they're working, and they care about their health. You have to care about your health like nothing else, because you don't have anything else unless you have it, we all know this.

What am I What am I, a fortune cookie? You know this, but you got to get it together, people, please take your health seriously. This is, you know, life is short and you don't want to live a long time not feeling well, or being afraid that you're ever going to get another stone again.

I can't promise you'll never get another stone again, but up to 80% of stone recurrences can just be wiped away, up to 80% just gone, okay? So, we can make up to an 80% reduction in new stones. That's amazing.

And you talk to anybody who I have worked with, most of them have lost weight, most of them don't make stones again, it's just is what it is because they work hard and they care about their health. End of story.

00:16:36 Jeff Sarris

Absolutely. Yeah, there's no magic pills, there's nothing. It's it's just, yeah, effort, and with that effort, come good results.

I think that's a great note to go out on. So, if you if you've been enjoying this episode, be sure to subscribe wherever you're watching or listening right now. If you're on YouTube, give it a subscribe and a like, that really helps us reach more people, and tell anyone who you know who needs access to this information.

This is completely free, it'll always be free, and we'd love to have you send them our way and help as best we can.

00:17:09 Jill Harris

Yes, thank you. Thanks, Francesca, that was a great question, although I kind of biffed it a little bit, but I got After about 42 minutes, I was right on the page.

00:17:18 Jeff Sarris

No, it was perfect. Sweet. Well, thanks again for listening to the show, everyone, and we will see you next week.

00:17:25 Jill Harris

Bye!
