How long does it take to form a kidney stone

How Kidney Stones Form

Your kidneys are filters. All day long, they clean your blood and make urine. That urine carries out extra minerals your body does not need—including calcium, oxalate, uric acid, and others. Most of the time, these minerals dissolve in your urine and leave your body without any problem.

Problems start when your urine becomes too concentrated. This usually happens when you are not drinking enough fluids, which is why drinking enough is your number one goal.

When urine is concentrated, the minerals inside it are crowded together. When minerals get crowded, they can bump into each other and stick together. When they stick together, they form tiny crystals.

At first, these crystals are very small. You would never feel them. In fact, many crystals form and leave the body without you ever knowing. But if the urine keeps staying concentrated day after day, more crystals can form. If the urine keeps containing high amounts of calcium, oxalate, sodium, or uric acid, those crystals can keep growing.

Over time, those tiny crystals can attach to the kidney’s lining. Once they stick, they can slowly build layer upon layer—almost like a pearl forming inside an oyster. This does not usually happen in one day. It happens after repeated exposure to urine that favors crystal growth.

Think of your teeth. One candy bar doesn’t make a cavity!

How Diet Affects Stone Formation

Diet plays a major role in how your urine looks. Here’s how specific habits can raise your risk:

Not drinking enough fluids

When urine volume is low, everything in it becomes more concentrated. Calcium, oxalate, uric acid, and other minerals are packed into a smaller amount of fluid, making it much easier for them to bump into each other and form crystals.

When urine is well diluted, these minerals stay spread out and are more likely to pass safely out of the body before they can stick together. Over days, weeks, and months of consistently low fluid intake, tiny crystals can slowly build into stones.

Dilution is the solution!

Eating too much sodium

Sodium and calcium travel together in the kidney. When more sodium is excreted, more calcium is pulled into the urine with it—and more calcium means more building blocks available for a calcium-based stone.

High sodium intake can also reduce urine citrate, which is a natural stone inhibitor that helps prevent crystals from sticking together. And when salty foods replace water-rich choices, urine can become more concentrated.

That combination—higher urine calcium, lower protective citrate, and more concentrated urine—creates a much friendlier environment for crystal formation.

Not getting enough dietary calcium

If you don’t get enough calcium from food or beverages, more oxalate is absorbed from your intestines into your bloodstream. That oxalate then travels to your kidneys and shows up in your urine. Higher urine oxalate levels increase the risk of crystal formation.

Eating too much added sugar

When we eat a lot of added sugar, insulin levels rise, which can increase calcium excretion in the urine. If sugary drinks replace water, urine can become more concentrated, further raising the risk.

This is why lowering added sugar is one of the core goals of the Kidney Stone Diet®—it helps reduce the building blocks that form stones in the first place. We’re talking candy bars, not fruit.

Eating very large portions of meat protein

If you regularly eat very large portions of meat protein, your urine can become more acidic and lower in citrate. Uric acid stones are more likely when urine stays acidic. Citrate is important because it helps prevent crystals from sticking together—think of it as a natural stone blocker. When citrate levels are low, stones form more easily.

How the Kidney Stone Diet® Helps

The Kidney Stone Diet® focuses on lowering the concentration of stone-forming minerals and increasing your natural protection.

Drinking enough fluid dilutes the urine so minerals are less likely to stick together. Eating adequate calcium with meals binds oxalate in the gut, so less oxalate reaches the kidneys. Lowering sodium helps reduce the amount of calcium lost in the urine. Eating fruits and vegetables helps raise citrate and improve urine pH. Keeping meat protein portions reasonable helps prevent urine from becoming too acidic and helps protect your bones at the same time.

When you follow these steps most of the time, you change the environment inside your kidneys. You make it harder for crystals to form. You make it harder for current stones to grow. You increase the chances that tiny crystals will flush out before they ever become a stone.

This is why one “bad” meal does not suddenly create a kidney stone. A stone forms when the urine environment stays unfriendly for a long time. It is repeated chemistry, not one event.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is to create a urine environment that protects you on most days of the week. When you understand what is happening inside your body, you can make decisions with confidence instead of fear.

Bottom line: Kidney stones form from repeated, concentrated urine chemistry over time. The Kidney Stone Diet® works by changing that chemistry in your favor.

Would fish be ok to eat on a regular basis? I eat fish at least three times a week. I don’t like to eat a lot of red meat anyways.

      Hi Scott,
Fish is included in the meat protein goals but you can eat fish and meat as long as you do not over do it. There are blog posts on these topics! Here is one for you: https://kidneystonediet.com/how-much-protein-do-you-need/

    Hi Jill,

Thanks for all the good information. The community garden is growing good stuff like crazy and the red potatoes look delicous. Is there any information that red potatoes might be different than other potatoes? Similar to the differences in bean types..

    Thanks,
    John Kjolhaug

      Hi John,
Please enjoy your red potatoes. We know that all potatoes tend to be a wee bit higher, but that is where my “portion, not perfection” rule comes into play. Worry less about the type and more about HOW MUCH you are eating. Get your calcium needs met and pair one of your servings with the potatoes so that it can lower that oxalate amount.
