Over the years, patients and students have shared with me what they keep in their kidney stone tool kit while away from home. I thought you might find this handy for when you travel, too.

Being sick can leave us all feeling out of control, but when we make a plan, we can regain some of that control.

Kidney Stone Travel Tool Kit

Here is a list of recommended items from kidney stone patients to have on hand when traveling if you have current kidney stones.

  • Heating pad
  • Prescription Pain meds (talk to your doctor)
  • Antinausea drugs (talk to a doctor)
  • AZO (talk to your doctor)
  • Advil, Tylenol, Naproxen, etc. (make sure these OTC meds are ok for you and your existing medical conditions)
  • Nausea bags
  • Flowmax (talk to your doctor)
  • Trip Insurance
  • Always know where close the ER is to your vacation stay
  • Lots of water
  • Adhesive heating pads
  • Sit in a hot bath if you have access in a hotel or Air B and B
  • Movement is always helpful when trying to pass a stone

Did I miss anything? Let me know what has helped you, and I will add it to our list.

Your friend and advocate,
Jill

Hi Jill, I just want to thank you for helping me more than anyone else ever has. I’ve been following you for many years and your list of calcium oxalate foods was a lifesaver for me. I started out by always checking your list to know what I could or could not eat before going to the grocery store. The first kidney stone I had was in 2005, I did
Lithotripsy twice on it and still it would not bust, so I ended up having surgery and taking it out of my kidney in one piece through my back which sounds horrible but really it wasn’t all that bad. But something I would not want to do again. After that, I had three more kidney stones About six years apart. The last ones I had, I had one in each kidney. Which I didn’t even realize was possible! After having the second stone, that is when I found your list online. You may not think of yourself this way, but you are truly a hero to me. I really don’t know what I would have done without that list. So thank you again.
So far I have been kidney stone free since 2018.As far as your list above of things that can help when the stone is moving and causing excruciating pain. I know is spot on because I have tried many of them myself, and those tips will definitely get you through the worst of the pain until it stops moving. Also, three days ago my son started having pain and went to an urgent care the doctor there did a CT and told him he had a kidney stone 2 to 3 mm in size. So he is at this time trying to pass that! Like mother like son. Unfortunately!!!

      hi Anita,
I suggest you do a 24 hour urine collection and you son should do one too. You guys could have a gentic issue and you wouldn’t know unless you did the urine collection. I hate hearing he has one.

I would add bladder incontinence pads. Passing a stone cane cause urgency issues and leaks

“The Kidney Stone Diet is far more than just a diet; this plan is life-altering!”

“The group calls will transform you physically and emotionally. Once you start this journey, your health naturally improves. I have lost a total of 40 pounds and have consistently kept it off. The group calls are such support; this is more like family than a zoom meeting to stay accountable. Jill is far more than a nurse; she is a life coach. Her platform is invaluable.”

“I have been following the Meal Plan for about 6 weeks and I feel amazing.”

“Eating healthy has also encouraged me to go to bed earlier, so I am also getting more sleep. Because of that, I have been able to get up before work and exercise! So yes, the positive effects are spilling over into all areas of a healthy lifestyle.”

Jerry T. | Meal Plan Subscriber

“I have been a part of the group calls with Jill for the last 14 months, and they are essential to being so successful with the Kidney Stone Diet Prevention Plan.”

Sarah B. | Group Calls with Jill

“These calls are the gold of this program!!”

“I can’t say enough about how Jill knows just the right questions to ask us or how she prods us to think about what is going on in our lives.”

Monica K. | Group Calls with Jill

“I took the course with Jill, and my second 24 hour urine was MUCH better than the first.”

“She gives very practical information, and it WORKS. I was totally overwhelmed at first. I got very poor diet information from my doctors. Jill made it easy for me to understand, and I took it one day at a time. I still watch her videos when I need a tune-up. Jill is the best, and she really cares about all of us. Take the course—it will help you!!!”
