Helping Kidney Stone Patients Put Dietary Recommendations Into Practice
I’m Jill Harris, LPN, a nurse specializing in kidney stone prevention through diet. I have worked with kidney stone patients since 1998 and spent 12 years at Litholink, helping patients understand their 24-hour urine results and put dietary recommendations into practice.
I am the co-creator of the Kidney Stone Diet® with Dr. Fredric Coe of the University of Chicago. Dr. Coe and I have worked closely together for many years and continue to collaborate today. His research and clinical expertise, combined with my years of direct patient education, form the foundation of my work.
I do not diagnose, prescribe, or replace the treating physician. My role is patient education: helping each person understand how to practically implement dietary changes based on their individual stone history, 24-hour urine results, medical history, and existing dietary restrictions.
This is especially important for complicated patients. Many are balancing stone prevention with diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, gastrointestinal disease, food intolerances, or other nutrition concerns. I help patients understand how those recommendations can work together rather than treating each condition in isolation.
A number of physicians who place a strong emphasis on kidney stone prevention have trusted me to help their patients implement the dietary portion of their treatment plan.
My goal is simple: help patients turn good medical advice into a realistic diet they can actually follow.
If you have a patient who needs this kind of support, I would be happy to help.
